What a surprise. No one would have expected that Switzerland would win against one of the favourites of this tournament. The hopes were to achieve a draw against Spain, in order to keep a chance to qualify for the round of 16. But the game ended totally different.
It's a truth! When you are the weaker team, it's the tactic that makes you win. The Swiss had just one single idea: Defend. Hardly any Swiss saw the Spanish half of the play ground. And even in their half, they concentrated mainly in the penalty box, which caused a major confusion from time to time. I guess, there were registered several heart attack during the game in Switzerland, since there were only about 10 minutes during the game, in which Switzerland was not under heavy pressure.
The Spanish team was trying constantly to break "the wall" but did not have the necessary fantasy and power to score, even though having a few very hot opportunities, which were often resolved by the Swiss goal keeper Diego Benaglio.
The second half of the game started similarly. The Spanish got used to attack and forgot to defend. Therefore, in the 52nd minute, the unexpected happened. In a counter attack Gelson Fernandes scored what is probably one of the ugliest goals during a world cup tournament. Several players were flying through the air, not being able to control the ball, which left it to Gelson Fernandes to score.
For the rest of the time, the game continued as if nothing had happend. The Swiss in the defence, the Spanish eagerly attacking. But don't say that this result is unfair! The Swiss Derdiyok had another chance in the 75th minute and hit only the post.
Probably it was not the better, who won today, but the brighter!
